OTE 43: The #1 Misconception About Building A Team That’s Stealing Your Time, Energy, And Money

how and who to hire

Have you tried to hire experts onto your team, only to realize that you can’t really afford them or don’t know how to manage them? In this episode of Owning the Edge Podcast, we are going to be talking about who you should be looking to hire, why you should hire them, and how to manage them.

You Can’t Clone Yourself

When I first started looking for people to hire out, I was trying to find someone who could do everything that I could do.

I expected to find someone who would immediately take on half of my workload, do everything perfectly, and not have to spend a bunch of time explaining everything to them.

I essentially wanted to be able to clone myself.

Everyone that came in was being judged based on my skills, and if they didn’t live up to them, they just weren’t the right person.

I am so glad I got that thinking out of my head because that’s not what I actually needed.

First off, hiring exceptionally talented people who come and do their thing at the level you would want is expensive as hell. In most cases, it is too costly for fledgling entrepreneurs who don’t have the funding to support it.

Obviously, at a certain level (when your business can afford it), these people are 100% worth it because they’re so skilled.

But until then, cloning yourself and hiring extremely skilled workers is not going to be in your business’s budget.

The truth is that you can get a lot of work done through freelancers, which is an excellent idea if your team isn’t ready to add on new people.

Think about it more as not hiring people to make more money for the company, but hiring people to free up some of your time so that you can make some more money for the company.

It’s All In The Steps

Get the things you need to be done broken down into step-by-step processes.

Having a standard operating procedure will allow you to bring someone in, let them read the steps, and have them actually get it done.

Think about things in your business that don’t require you to have some custom uniqueness or creativity that only you can provide. Especially things that are simple and repetitive. These are areas where you might be able to get some support.

If you know that you’re looking for someone to fill in the holes of things that can be done repetitively and consistently, then it does not need any of your magic, and you can just let them do it.
